I'm not in any way saying you can't be a good SEO unless you can build websites and write algorithms, but it definitely helps.

Usually to perform a thorough website optimisation you need to hire someone to do the SEO, someone to do the conversion rate optimisation, someone to review your user experience and finally a developer to implement all of those.

An alternative is to use an agency which has an in-house department that can provide all these services and manage the project for you. This leads to superior results but it comes at a cost which is usually prohibitive for smaller businesses who don't have the money to spend thousands of pounds a month on optimising their website.

It’s no surprise that digital agencies can see around 50 - 60% profit margins (and that’s on top of all the costs of employees, offices, advertising and bonuses…) I’m not trying to discredit agencies, for some companies they are the perfect solution to not having to have an in-house team but often I talk with friends and people I work with who don’t have such a positive experience. Due to increasing costs, lower budgets, less demand and other factors some companies are forced to lower their costs by Outsourcing their work to contractors in countries with cheaper labor or by using automation tools. Neither of these are necessarily bad but often what happens is this disconnection between client and service provider can lead to inferior results.
